      Before his death Munsey himself summed up his life this way: "I have no heirs. I am disappointed in my friendships. . . . I have forty million dollars, but what has it brought me? Not happiness."

      Born in Mercer, Me., Aug. 21, 1854.
      Introduced The Golden Argosy, juvenile weekly (now the adult monthly, The Argosy; 1898, launched Munsey's Weekley, later converting it into Munsey's Magazine; now also owns The All-Story Magazine, The Scrap Book, The Cavalier, The Railroad Man's Magazine, and four daily newspapers.
      Attended public schools of Maine. Has remained unmarried. Entered upon business career in country store; became mgr. of Western Union Telegraph office, Augusta Me.; located in New York, 1882.
      Clubs: Union League, New York, Yacht, Ardsley, Riding, Manhattan, Lawyers', Lambs, N.Y., Metropolitan, Chevy Chase (Washington).
